Texas Ibogaine Initiative

Ibogaine treatment changes lives and it has saved many lives over the past few decades. People who have sought and received ibogaine treatment for addiction and other conditions report that it has helped them break free from their addictions and has helped them overcome obstacles that previously seemed insurmountable even with other types of treatment. Ibogaine is innovative and effective, and doctors, researchers, and patients are amazed by its efficacy for those who desperately need it.

However, even though this type of treatment has been effective for so many, it remains illegal to offer in the United States today. Individuals living in the United States who wish to receive ibogaine treatment must travel to other countries to try this method of treatment, and doing so can be financially inaccessible for many. It’s difficult to know how many people could potentially benefit from ibogaine who do not currently have access to it, but the number is likely vast. For many Americans who struggle with addiction and various mental health conditions, ibogaine is simply out of reach.

The Texas Ibogaine Initiative has been a huge push for state-funded research on ibogaine treatment for addiction in the state of Texas. This initiative’s primary goal has been to secure state funding for research to prove that ibogaine can help the people who need it. In doing so, supporters of this initiative have hoped that someday, ibogaine treatment will be available and accessible to people living in the United States.

On May 22 of this year, the Texas Ibogaine Initiative passed in Texas. This is an important first step on the path to eventually allowing doctors to offer ibogaine treatment to people across our country legally and without barriers. Read on to learn more about this important initiative and its recent success.

What is the Texas Ibogaine Initiative?

The passage of the Texas Ibogaine Initiative is exciting for anyone who knows about and believes in this type of treatment. Ibogaine is a psychoactive substance that is derived from the root bark of a shrub found in central Africa called Tabernanthe iboga, or simply iboga. It is used by members of the Bwiti religion, a religion primarily practiced in Gabon, as part of their religious rituals. Through the ritual use of the root bark of this plant, Bwiti people experience visions and insights that aid in personal and spiritual growth.

Several decades ago, people outside of Africa discovered that this substance can also help people struggling with addiction. When iboga is used in a clinical setting under a doctor’s direction and supervision, people find that they can use the psychotropic state it causes to discover the root of their addictions and work through them. After the experience is over, many report no further craving or dependency on the drug to which they were previously dependent.

Of course, ibogaine isn’t for everyone, but the vast number of successful experiences reported by the doctors and patients who have used it suggest that it can likely help many people. Although some research on ibogaine’s applications for addiction treatment occurred in the 1990s in the United States, it did not advance further due to concerns about risks related to ibogaine’s possible effects on the heart. For the most part, ibogaine has been all but ignored by researchers in the United States since then.

The Texas Ibogaine Initiative sought to revitalize and renew research on ibogaine in the United States. Specifically, it asked for the allocation of $50 million in state funds for this research. That funding will be 100% matched by a pharmaceutical developer.

With this $100 million, plus additional funding from three philanthropic family foundations in the state, clinical trials – with the goal of eventual FDA approval – will take place in Texas to determine safe ways to use ibogaine to treat opioid use disorder, co-occurring substance use disorder, and other co-occurring mental health conditions.

According to the non-profit REID Foundation, the primary promoter of the Texas Ibogaine Initiative, ibogaine treatment fully resolves physiological substance dependence for 80% of people struggling with addiction with a single treatment and for 97% of individuals who receive a second supportive treatment. It also suggests that ibogaine has “the single unique ability to clear and reset the brain’s opioid receptors while also restoring the brain’s organic dopamine and serotonin production to pre-opioid exposure levels.”

Certainly, with that success rate, it’s time for more research on ibogaine treatment to be conducted in the United States. Texas is taking the lead.

Why Texas? The State’s Unique Role in Psychedelic Reform

While some people may be surprised to hear that this initiative was Texas-based, recent moves in the state of Texas make it less surprising for others. In 2021, Texas made history with the passage of House Bill 1802. This important bill allowed and encouraged the first publicly-funded psychedelic research since the Controlled Substances Act was passed by the federal government in 1970.

As a result of the passage of that bill, the first clinical trial studying the use of psilocybin for PTSD in the United States was able to get underway at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston with the ultimate goal of helping veterans. Soon, more research programs focused on psychedelic medicine will begin in Texas and beyond.

Now, other states have started to use Texas’ success in this realm as a model. Many hope that soon research on psychedelic treatment options will be allowed and will be funded by their state governments as well.  Already in 2025, lawmakers have introduced bills in other state legislatures pushing for state-funded psychedelic research in 14 different states

Texas is leading the pack when it comes to state-funded research on psychedelic-based treatment.  The Lone Star State certainly has started a very exciting trend.

The Case for Ibogaine in Addiction Treatment

Ibogaine addiction treatment has proven effective in the countries that allow it. Many addiction treatment professionals in the United States have long hoped that someday they, too, would be able to offer this treatment to the people who come to them for help.

Groups like Americans for Ibogaine and others have been pushing for more scientific research in this area and for legislation to support funding for it. Many groups and individuals are working hard to raise public awareness about this type of treatment too, including politicians like Texas U.S representatives and former Navy SEALs Congressman Morgan Luttrell, Congressman Dan Crenshaw, and others.

Potential Impact of the Texas Ibogaine Initiative

For some, ibogaine addiction treatment was believed to be ineffective or dangerous for many years. Because of this, this innovative treatment did not get the attention in the USA that it deserved, despite its successes elsewhere in the world. Fortunately, thanks to the passage of the Texas Ibogaine Initiative, that’s about to change. There is much hope for this research. Soon, perhaps, ibogaine will be available to people who can benefit from it in the United States.  The potential impact is huge. Without a doubt, if ibogaine is available to people seeking addiction treatment in our country, many people will benefit. This is only the beginning on this path – but after the passage of the Texas Ibogaine Initiative, the future looks bright.
